Inspector Hector
scratched her head.
No doubt about it,
this guy was dead.
A knife in his back
and a hole in his head.
Found in the woods
by a curious dog,
feet sticking out
from under a log.
The owner had moved fast,
dialled nine nine nine.
Rain was coming,
so pushed for time.
Tents were erected
to preserve the scene.
Important to keep
the evidence clean.
Who was the victim?
Where had he died?
Hector was old school —
the facts never lied.
“Ok Jones, tell me
what do we know?”
“Not much, Ma’m,
so far so slow.
“No ID
or visible tattoos.
No jewellery.”
“That’s all bad news.”
“A naked body,
aging white man.
Make of that lot
what you can…”
“Well you won’t shift a body
with a knife in its back,
so my guess is this is
the scene of attack.
“Hmmmm…
probably…
the pathologist will help.
Where the hell is she?”
“Anyway I’m off.
If there’s anything,
ring me.”
Back at the station:
“What’s the story so far?”
“We’ve got a match, Ma’m —
the dead man’s Charlie Blah.”
“Blah Blah Blah…?
I’ve heard that name before.
Wasn’t he into rugs?
Big time score?”
“Yeh, banged up
way back in sixty-four…”
“Hmmm…
well let’s have a look.
What does it say?
Yep, this guy
was a player in his day.
“Question is — who’d want him
out of the way?”
